Set thousands of years in the future, the board game Dune is based on Frank Herbert's novels about a barren planet at the heart of the political machinations of the human space empire. Designed by the creators of Eon of 'Cosmic Encounter fame, some claim that the game can be described as Cosmic Encounter taking place in the universe of Dune, but the two games have little in common in their actual mechanics or objectives; they both take place in space. Like Cosmic Encounter, it is a game that generates interaction between players through negotiation and bluffing.

The players each play the role of one of the factions trying to control Dune. Each faction has special powers that disregard certain rules of the game. Each turn, players move around the map trying to collect precious spice while facing giant worms, deadly storms and the military forces of the other players. A delicate political balance is formed between the factions to prevent one side from becoming too strong. When a challenge is launched in a territory, the fight takes the form of hidden bids with additional treason maps to increase uncertainty.

The game ends when one faction (or two allied factions) is able to control a number of strongholds on the planet. Note that the Descartes edition of Dune includes the Duel and Spice Gathering expansion, the "Landsraad variant" of Avalon Hill's General magazine, and additional character discs not supplied by AH.
