Each of the four roles requires unique responsibilities, which encourages stakeholders to develop an effective communication plan and use authentic naval terminology. The captain oversees the achievement of mission objectives, monitors costs in action points and is responsible for crew morale. The first officer operates the companion application, manages the flow of information and looks after the health of the crew. The navigator pilots the submarine by setting its course and depth, but also by updating all essential information on the strategic and tactical map. Finally, the chief engineer is responsible for the engines, repairs and other mechanical equipment on board the U-boat (such as ballast tanks, weapon systems, etc.). At the same time, each of the four officers commands his or her own group of crew members by giving orders through a worker placement system.

The idea of the companion application is to provide a realistic, real-time gaming experience. To achieve this, the app features the most important instruments of the submarine (such as the periscope, hydrophone, Enigma, etc.). However, the vast majority of the gameplay takes place on the game board, with the instruments revealing hidden information and the app only requiring certain data (such as the submarine's heading, speed, etc.) in order to generate an appropriate response from the opposing force. The application also handles all ambient sound effects, allowing for greater immersion of players in the confined space of a Type VIIC.

From quick skirmishes, through full combat missions, to a full campaign, U-Boot will allow you to conduct submarine operations in all the major naval theatres of World War II. The success of these missions depends on the completion of various tasks delegated to the crew by the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine (German Navy HQ), which include patrol duty, convoy attacks, laying mines in enemy waters and much more! Each mission will require players to adopt different strategies and play styles to complete it, and the companion app will produce a detailed report at the end of each game session (evaluating players' efforts, and possibly awarding decorations, promotions, etc).
