Hagakure consists of 30 cards: 17 Villagers of values 1 to 17, 10 Samurai of values 18 to 27 and 3 special Samurai, the Old Bishops. Players take turns playing a card from their hand. The only constraint is to play a Samurai if the first card played in the trick was one. The player with the highest value wins the trick and opens the next one. Old Bishops played alone have a draw value, but if several are in the same trick, the last player to play wins the trick.
Each trick won is worth 1 point. Capturing the smallest Samurai earns an extra 1 point. A player who has not won any trick in a round scores -2 points. At the beginning of the round, each player can play one of his Nobori chips, allowing him to temporarily change the rules of the game and scoring.
