The race to the stars is on! Explore, Colonise, Develop, Sell, Consume or Produce? Which will it be? Which of the former Earth colonies will succeed in harnessing hyperspace jump technology to colonise the galaxy? Who will discover the secrets of the mysteriously vanished and powerful Alien overlords? Your goal: build the most powerful and prosperous space empire! In the card game Race for the Galaxy, players build galactic civilizations by playing cards in front of them that represent worlds or technical and social developments. Some worlds allow players to produce goods, which can later be consumed to earn either cards or victory points.
At the beginning of each round, players each secretly and simultaneously select one of seven roles that correspond to the phases in which the round is taking place. By selecting a role, players activate that phase for that turn, giving each player the opportunity to perform the action of that phase. For example, if a player selects the role of coloniser, each player has the opportunity to colonise one of the planets in their hand. The player who chose the role, however, receives a bonus that applies only to him.
