Ticket to Ride: The Ghost Train takes the gameplay of the Ticket to Ride series and scales it down for a younger audience. In general, players collect parade cards, claim routes on the map and try to connect locations such as the mad scientist's laboratory, the gingerbread house and the lonely barn that appear on their tickets. In more detail, the game board represents a map of a city with certain locations connected by coloured paths. Each player starts with four coloured parade cards in hand and two tickets; each ticket shows two locations, and you try to connect these two locations with a contiguous path of your trains to complete the ticket.
During a turn, you can either draw two parade cards from the deck or discard parade cards to claim a route between two locations by placing your ghost trains on it; for the latter option, you must discard cards corresponding to the colour and number of spaces of that route (for example, two yellow cards for a two-space yellow route). If you are connecting the two locations shown on a ticket with one of your train routes, reveal the ticket, place it face up in front of you, and then draw a new ticket. (If you cannot connect the locations shown on one of the tickets because the routes are blocked, you may take your whole turn to discard those tickets and draw two new ones.) If you create a route from the Dark Forest area to the Seaside area, you get the "Trick or Treat!" bonus.
