While the controversial construction of the Sacré-Coeur was dragging on at the beginning of the 20th century, a much more modest building at the foot of the hill was to witness the blossoming of many talents: the bateau-lavoir. In it, artists waited for better days. Often forced to sell their freshly painted canvases at the Sunday market for a few coins, they hope to sell their best paintings to Ambroise Vollard, the art dealer.
