During the reign of King D. João V, Portugal was a great European power. From Brazil, the king ordered Sergeant Melo Palheta to travel to French Guiana to officially establish the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713 and to secretly bring coffee beans to Brazil. Sargent succeeded and by 1800 Brazil was already one of the largest and most important coffee producers in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, coffee from Brazil, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola and Timor was widely appreciated in Portugal and inspired the most prestigious cafés in emblematic locations that attracted the elite.
