Scandinavia in the Viking Age, from about 800 to 1050, was characterised by powerful magnates (or chiefs) and kings. The title of king was not inherited, it had to be fought for. The first magnate is recognised by the others as 'first among equals'. Four magnates are now fighting for Herrlof: victory and praise in war. Who will become the next Viking king? In this two player game of skill, your goal is to be the first player to reach 50 points or more, the player with the most points wins. You score points by winning rounds and any bonuses you may earn. The game is played in up to 10 rounds (although most players easily reach 50 points before that) of 15 cards.
In each round you: 1) deal 15 cards, 2) place the trump, 3) predict your score, 4) fight for tricks, and 5) reveal the predictions and determine your score. All predictions are made in secret, so that your opponent does not know your objective. Some Vikings have special abilities that influence tricks. There are also additional cards that can destroy tricks or add other uncertainties.
