The role-playing game The Book of the Five Rings (L5A) (original title Legend of the five rings (L5R)) is a role-playing game from the card game Legend of the Five Rings. The world of L5R is called Rokugan. It is an empire whose birth is described in the imaginary mythology of the game by the episode of the fall of the Kami.
In the role-playing game in the Book of Five Rings, the players play as samurai warriors (bushi), mages (shugenja), courtiers and priests. The known universe, called Rokugan, is mainly divided among several clans: the Unicorn, Lion, Crab, Crane, Phoenix, Scorpion, and Dragon clans, plus a number of minor clans.
Each player belongs to a clan, to whom he owes loyalty and obedience. The characters' ideal of life must be guided by respect for bushidō and the code of honour inherent in their status as samurai. It is therefore in a rather violent, strict, coded environment, where magic or words are often as powerful as weapons, that players will have to evolve, and work as a team to carry out the missions entrusted to them.
The game system is based on the use of specific skills (e.g. archery) with a more general attribute (e.g. Agility). These attributes are themselves associated with the 5 rings, or elementary forces: Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Emptiness.
Each ring thus brings together a pair of physical or mental characteristics.
The tests are based on ten-sided dice rolls. These rolls are made on the principle of roll & keep, i.e. roll a certain number of dice, and add up some of them. The number of dice to roll and keep depends on the attribute and skill associated with the action. The creation of characters involves a system of advantages and defects.
