For thousands of years the immortal Principality of Ustalav has been burdened by its dark past. Sheltered by fog-shrouded hills and decaying cities, creatures that should not exist prowl around at night and superstitious inhabitants carefully lock their doors to protect themselves from the screams and scratches that herald their coming. Vampires, werewolves, undead monstrosities and even stranger beings have taken up residence here, and even people crazy enough to ignore them tremble when one mentions the Whispering Tyrant, the former conqueror of the country who still moves under his Gibet prison. Most Ustalavians are ordinary people, shrewd merchants or penniless nobles who survive on their last vestiges of wealth and reputation. But over there, nobody dares to look at the shadows, for fear that something will return your gaze.
