Alkenastre, the Smog City, is a bastion of civilisation in the heart of the Mana Desolation, a region ravaged by magic. The ingenious citizens of this city survive in the Desert of the Magic Scar with their clever inventions, such as firearms and mechanical automatons. But lately, their mechanical protectors have become uncontrollable within their city. And it is up to the PJs to venture beyond the city walls to find the origin of this strange behaviour.
