It is a matter of getting food and quickly returning to the area where one cannot be reached by the terrible carnivore Tyrannos. If the herbivores all reach the finish line, they've won and Tyrannos has nothing to fall back on. Then they can celebrate their victory! If Tyrannos makes it to the finish line, he will cut off all the herbivores that have not yet reached the finish line, so they have lost.
The worst thing that can happen to a herbivore is to be on Tyrannos' arrival square just as Tyrannos reaches it: he is then eaten alive!
