The Amazon basin is a gigantic plain covered by an equatorial forest closely intertwined with the river and its network of tributaries. The slope is very shallow, so the Amazon flows slowly. Frequent and sudden rains cause large variations in water levels and constantly change the course of the banks. Large areas are flooded. Most land animals need to be able to swim or be good climbers to be safe.
