Hear the word of Mentor, Guardian of Loretome, and I will tell you of a bygone age and of days when the Empire was saved against all hope. For I fear, indeed, the imminent return of darkness... The fierce legions of Morear, Lord of Chaos, had swept all before them. At the sight of the Black Banner and the massed hordes of Chaos, even the bravest of the Emperor's warriors had fled, leaving the land to the ravages of the enemy and all men in deep despair. Then a fearsome warrior appeared. He was the Prince of the Boderlands, and his name was Rogar the Barbarian. Like the ancient kings of legend before him, he wore a glittering diamond on his forehead called the Star of the West. Thus hope returned and men came out of their shelters in the hills and forests to rally to his banner. He was joined by other great heroes: Durgin, the brave Dwarf warrior of the Edge Mountains; Ladril, the Elf Mage from the far reaches of Athelorn; and Telor, the Enchanter whose powers were to save Rogar on many occasions. For many years. Rogar built up his army, taking care to avoid any direct confrontation with Morcar's general until everything was ready: this did not prevent him from continually harassing the invader's supply troops and eliminating many Orcs and Goblins in the process.
At last the day dawned for which Rogar had long been waiting, and his army was now strong and seasoned. Standing on the top of the mountains. Ladril spotted the Dark Hosts from afar and ordered Ourgin to sound the horn to call everyone to arms. Rogar's troops fell upon the enemy from all sides and the battle raged. Many vile creatures and brave men perished that day. Yet as the day wore on, it was the vanquished Darkness that was seen to desert the battlefield. The victory, however, was not absolute, for it turned out that Morcar and his general had managed to escape across the Sea of Claws, from where, even now, they plot their revenge. Their plans will soon be complete and the Empire will have to find a new Rogar. But where are the heroes of today who are worth it? You will need to learn a lot if you are to follow in the footsteps of Rogar and his companions. I will help you to the best of my ability. This book that accompanies me - Loretome - was written at the beginning of time, and all that ever was or will be is recorded on its countless pages. With it I can guide you on your quest, but I must not interfere lest a greater peril befall the world and the Lord of Chaos triumph forever.
Hero Quest is an adventure game set in a land besieged by the forces of Chaos. Mentor, the mysterious, magically gifted sage, has invited four brave adventurers to take up the challenge to become heroes and save the land. The game training should enable you to play a game without having to learn the full rules. Once you have played your first quest, you will be ready to learn the rest of the rules and embark on the other quests. Hero Quest is a game for 2 to 5 players, one of whom must assume the role of Morcar, the evil wizard, and command his entourage of monsters. This player is referred to as the "wizard player". The other players each command one of the four potential heroes, namely the Elf, the Dwarf, the Enchanter and the Barbarian. These players are referred to as the "character players". Each quest offers a new challenge to the character players.
First the wizard player chooses a quest from the Quest Book and reads the text on the scroll to the players. This text tells the characters what they must accomplish. Then the wizard player places all the elements of the first room on the board as shown on the card. This first room contains the staircase from which all players start the game. The elements of the other rooms and passages will only be placed by the wizard as the players move. The player to the left of the wizard starts the game and the game continues in a clockwise direction.
