Manchester E is a city in the United Kingdom located in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester. It has the status of city since 1853 and counts 545 500 inhabitants in 2017. It is sometimes considered as the "second city of England" thanks to its economic, cultural and sporting importance, although its surface and its population do not allow it to dethrone Birmingham. Manchester is categorized as a "beta city" by The GaWC (Study Network on Globalization and Global Cities). Its inhabitants are called Mancunien (ne) s. The city is at the heart of a large metropolitan area of over two and a half million people whose main cities are: Bury, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Stockport, Salford, Altrincham, Wigan. The name "Manchester" is used both to designate the city and the city as such.
