The identity of the region was built, not around a culture or a language, but around the predominant value of work: firstly, the colossal work of the land which made the Nord the second largest agricultural region in France, and secondly, industrial work since the power of industrial activity has structured the life of the region. For a century, Nord-Pas de Calais has been at the forefront of the textile, coal, steel, chemical and metallurgical industries. Today, the region has taken advantage of its geographical location to become a true crossroads of Europe. The construction of the Channel Tunnel has greatly contributed to this.
Nord-Pas de Calais has developed an exceptional architectural heritage: fortified cities, abbeys, military architecture of Vauban. The region has successfully carried out major projects in the field of education. Its famous and varied gastronomy, its parades where the famous giants appear, its mills, the warm welcome of its inhabitants contribute to give it a real tourist attraction.
