Once the capital of the Gallic tribe of the Andes and called "City of the Andecaves", the city then took the name of Juliomagus. In turn, the Foulques, the Plantagenoîts, the Capetians and finally the Valois governed the city. Angers has welcomed some of the great figures of French history such as the Plantagenoîts, King René, François Rabelais, and Joachim du Bellay. Its castle is home to the famous painting of the Apocalypse.
Today, Angers is distinguished as much by its rich heritage as by its economic and cultural dynamism. The presence of large industrial groups and a very large number of small and medium-sized businesses give the city an industrial and tertiary identity. Angevine's economy is based on five major sectors of activity: electronics/computers, automotive equipment, insurance and health insurance, and the plant industry. Its two universities and its Grandes Ecoles promote links between education and the economy. One and a half hours from Paris by high-speed train and linked to European metropolises by its new business airport, Angers is regularly ranked among the top cities in the press for the quality of its living environment and its industrial dynamism.
Finally, Angers enjoys worldwide prestige as the gateway to the Loire Valley, recently recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
