Avignon, daughter of the Rhone, cultivates a considerable cultural heritage: set in its 14th century ramparts, from which the four arches of the famous Pont Saint-Bénezet seem to spring, it is dominated by the Palace of the Popes and by the Rock of the Doms. It was the center of Christianity in the 14th century (seven French popes sat there). Its greatest monuments have been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, earning it the title of European City of Culture in the year 2000. Avignon is also a city of living culture, particularly known for its drama festival.
It is a central industrial area of the Vaucluse (chemical and paper industries...) and the capital of the Côtes du Rhône wines. You will be charmed by its mansions, its cobbled streets, its old paddle wheels turning to the rhythm of the Sorgue, its small squares shaded by plane trees which encourage you to enjoy a Provencal meal.
