Raised to the rank of city by Henry IV, Brest saw the birth of its military vocation thanks to the exceptional site of the deep and protected harbor. This situation was also the first reason for its destruction in 1944. Rebuilt after the war, it is now a large university and industrial city of 156,000 inhabitants.
