On the road to Mont-Saint-Michel and the D-Day landing beaches, a few minutes from Cabourg and Deauville, Caen is an ideal base to discover the Normandy region. With a population of more than 200,000, Caen is the capital of Lower Normandy and offers a wealth of heritage and culture, reflecting its 1,000 years of history. From William the Conqueror, Caen has preserved its ducal castle, its two abbeys and many period districts. In its desire to preserve the memory of the Second World War and to draw a message for peace, it has built a Memorial. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the city is offering a whole program of festivities in 2004.
At the entrance to the campus of its university, which was completely rebuilt after its bombing in 1944, the Phoenix, which according to legend died in the flames and rose from its ashes, symbolizes the renewal of a city that has been able to rebuild itself at the dawn of the 21st century.
