Once a simple Flemish fishing village, the port of Dunkirk was established around the year 800. Its strategic geographical position quickly attracted the covetousness of the French, Spanish and Dutch. Bought by Louis XIV from the English in 1662, the city became definitively French and experienced a period of prosperity thanks to Vauban who transformed the port and the ramparts. It was during this period that the famous Dunkirk corsair Jean Bart became famous.
The Treaty of Utrecht, the French Revolution and the two wars successively disturbed this development. Today, Dunkirk is the 3rd largest French port, known for its industries and its carnival. It is also a seaside resort that is both family-friendly and sporty, open to the most furrowed sea in Europe. A city of business tourism and congresses, the City of Jean Bart is the headquarters of the University of the Littoral and one of the most dynamic sectors of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
