The Gironde is the largest department in France and is centered around the Garonne and Dordogne valleys which join to form the largest estuary in Europe. Its capital is Bordeaux, with 230,000 inhabitants, and nearly one million with its urban community. From Soulac to Pilat, the coast extends its sandy beaches over 100 km, interrupted by the Arcachon basin. Behind, the forest of maritime pines conceals magnificent ponds.
This land of waters is home to the most famous vineyards in the world between Médoc, Graves, Entre-deux-Mers, Sauternais or, on the right bank of the Dordogne, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Bourgeais and Blayais. Outside Bordeaux, other sites have a magnificent architectural heritage, such as the citadel of Blaye, Bazas, Saint-Émilion or the winter town of Arcachon, but also literary, such as the homes of François Mauriac, Saint-Symphorien and Malagar, now owned by the Regional Council of Aquitaine, the castle of Montaigne or that of Montesquieu in La Brède.
If the Gironde is first and foremost a country of good living and flourishing tourism, its economic fabric has been able to diversify, between wine growing, aeronautics and high technology.
