Located in a unique mountain setting, capital of the Dauphiné and guardian of the Alps, Grenoble is known for its great capacity for invention, adaptation and attraction. Previously surrounded by a fortified wall, it has created since the end of the nineteenth century new districts in constant expansion. It was the cradle of the revolution and the central point of resistance in the Alps during the time of the enemy occupation.
With a powerful industry, it has remarkably exploited the energy of the "white coal" and today houses a multitude of high-tech industries. The "brain of the Alps", as it is known, has grown very rapidly over the last few decades: it has seen the establishment of major world-renowned companies, leading universities in the scientific field and numerous research centers. All of these assets have enabled the Alpine capital to play a leading national and international role.
