Le Havre is first and foremost a gigantic seaport, the leading French port for foreign trade and container traffic and the fifth largest European port. Around this port dynamism, of which hydrocarbons are the main component, the city has been able to develop numerous activities, mainly in the trade and service sectors. Metropolis of the estuary and first city of Normandy, it was founded in 1517 by François I and named then "Le Havre de Grace". It spreads out its installations at the point of the most advanced mole of the country of Caux.
However, almost entirely destroyed in 1945, Le Havre has been able to redesign ancient and modern spaces and received in 2001 the label of "city of art and history", awarded for the first time to an architectural creation of the 20th century. With its charming seaside resort, Ste Adresse, and several quality museums, the city is resolutely looking to the future, as evidenced by its "Port 2000" project, which aims to welcome the largest ships. It also offers a pleasant living environment and extensive leisure opportunities to its inhabitants.
