Limousin is an old administrative region, resulting from a French historical and cultural region and which was composed of the three departments of Corrèze (19), Creuse (23) and Haute-Vienne (87). It is located entirely in the northwestern part of the Massif Central. Its inhabitants are called Limousin. In Limousin it is called Lemosin (pronounced Lemuzi or, in places, Limouzi).
Limousin was one of the few French administrative regions (with Franche-Comté and Auvergne) to have a cultural and territorial coherence of two thousand years. Its borders are about the same as those of the Gallo-Roman city of the Lemovices. The Limousin administrative region, which is an integral part of historic Occitania and forms a northern border, was mainly the result of the regrouping of the former provinces of Limousin and Marche, but it corresponded mainly to the former diocese of Limoges, itself modeled on the city of the Lemovices. The former Carolingian county of Limoges also occupied the same space. The province was, from Antiquity to the twelfth century, an essential component of Aquitaine.
