The history of Montpellier goes back ten centuries, when Muslim fundamentalists from Spain landed in Cordoba to stop the development of the city. Jewish and Arab scholars found refuge in Montpellier. Over the centuries, the city has seen periods of growth and periods of decline. Its prestigious faculty of medicine is the oldest medical university in the world still in operation. Montpellier, now the eighth largest city in France, has undergone intense and well thought-out urbanization since the 1960s, mixing the historic center, traditional neighborhoods and new residential areas. The proximity of the sea and the Cevennes, combined with the Mediterranean climate, make it a welcoming city.
Although wine-growing has played a decisive role in the region's economy, Montpellier is also a breeding ground for grey matter, as evidenced by its technology park centered around five poles: agronomy, health, information technology, telecommunications and tourism. It has attracted prestigious companies that work in fruitful collaboration with research laboratories. A city of the south, Montpellier lives in its streets in all seasons and maintains a sense of friendliness and openness, like its "Fête des Continents".
