In the southwest of France, facing the Pyrenees, a hundred kilometers from the ocean, Pau is first and foremost, in the heart of the Gaves region, the capital of Bearn and the city of the good king Henry, "Noste Henric". A city of more than 85,000 inhabitants, it is both deeply rooted in its history and turned towards the future. A medieval and renaissance city (Gaston Phébus, Henri d'Albret shaped it, Henri IV was born there), it is today an important industrial center, in particular since the discovery of the Lacq deposits in the fifties; It was a Mecca for the European aristocracy and an "English colony" in the 19th century. Nowadays, it is a university town; in the 19th century, it had a golf course, a racetrack, and later the first school for airplane pilots.

The old quarter, south of the Place de Verdun, is organized around the castle, located at the end of a promontory and whose oldest parts date back to the 12th century. The national museum of the castle allows to discover admirable tapestries and the memories of Henri IV, among which the famous tortoise shell, legendary cradle of the king. Not far from there is the building where sat, at the end of the XVIth century, the sovereign council of Béarn then the Parliament of Navarre from 1620, as well as the place of the Mint where were the monetary workshops of Béarn. The city center is located around two squares, the Clemenceau square and its Palais des Pyrénées and the Royal square with the statue of Henri IV, the Saint Louis theater and the vast esplanade overlooking the funicular. The famous boulevard des Pyrénées, 1800 m long, connects the park of the castle to the Beaumont park, to the east, and offers a unique panorama on the mountains. To the north, you can visit the Hédas district, the Bernadotte museum or the O'Quin street, still lined with beautiful villas from the English period.

Nearby, taking the road to Bordeaux, you will find the Pont-Long racetrack, the Béarn flying club and the Pau-Uzein airport. In the Billère plain, the golf course still has a typical Victorian club house.
