Lascaux, the house of La Boétie in Sarlat, the tower of Vésone or the cathedral Saint-Front in Périgueux, the valley of the Dordogne, the cingle of Trémolat, the abbey of Cadouin, the gardens of Eyrignac, the bastide of Monpazier, some sites among many others which make the extraordinary richness of Périgord. Country also of ceps, confits and truffles, of caves and troglodyte villages, of castles and churches, the Périgord merges with the Dordogne department, in the extreme north of Aquitaine, between Charente and Corrèze. It includes four large natural regions. In the north, the green Périgord, around Nontron and Brantôme, is a country of woods and heather moors where chestnut trees and fat meadows dominate.
In the center, the White Périgord, formed of limestone plateaus cut by rivers such as the Isle, the Auvézère and the Dronne, contains in its center the capital Périgueux, the ancient Gallo-Roman Vesunna. To the south-east, bordering the Gironde and the Lot-et-Garonne, the purple Périgord, the land of Montaigne, takes its name from the autumn colors of the vine; it extends around Bergerac and the bastides, Monbazillac, Monpazier or Beaumont. Finally, in the south-east, the Périgord Noir is a land of round hills covered with dark forests of oak and chestnut trees and low valleys (Dordogne, Vézère) dominated by blond and ochre cliffs. Famous for Lascaux, its "Vallée de l'Homme" and Sarlat, the Périgord Noir also has in Les Eyzies one of the most important prehistory museums in the world.
