Picardy is a former French administrative region, created by decree on June 2, 1960, grouping the departments of Aisne, Oise and Somme, whose capital was Amiens. As part of the 2015 territorial reform, the Picardie region merged with the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region on January 1, 2016. The name of the new region thus formed is Hauts-de-France, after having been temporarily Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie. The name and territory of this former administrative region originated from a cultural region north of Paris, a former province.
Picardy, a fraction of the ancient Gallic Belgium, covers in the Late Middle Ages all the territories north of Paris, from Beauvais to Calais and Tournai, speaking a Romance language distinct from French, Picard, whose most vivacious dialect is now called Ch'ti. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, it only designated the military government of its southern part, which was disputed by the Burgundian Netherlands but remained French. Under the Old Regime, it was erected into a generality and, on the eve of the Revolution, it formed the heart of the generality of Amiens, which extended from the Eastern Channel to Champagne and from the Île-de-France to Artois and Hainaut.
