Toulon is first and foremost a harbor, one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, which majestically curves into a dark blue slick lined with light-colored, cream and pink buildings. It is also of course a powerful military port that has lived for centuries to the rhythm of the French Navy. Cruisers and frigates have long since replaced galleys and convicts. The old city, located in the south like the port, contrasts with the modern city in the north, a clear and airy Haussmanian district, while the suburbs climb the hills.
Prefecture of the Var, Toulon, after having been razed by half during the Allied landings in 1944, has regained its place as the first French military port. Its agglomeration counts 520 000 inhabitants. It was in Toulon, during the siege of 1793, that the young artillery captain Bonaparte made history by leading the Republican army to victory. The "moccots", the name given to the Toulon people of origin, were numerous to have a career in the show business, from Raimu to Bécaud through Mayol.
