Touraine is the cradle of French history. It keeps the traces of all the periods of History, from the Neolithic to the contemporary history. Even if Saint Martin was its first ambassador, it has above all been marked by the history of the Renaissance, of carefree and gallant manners, of hunting with hounds... The exploits of Joan of Arc, the rivalry between Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers have their history here. The happy life of the Valois in their royal residences (Loches, Chinon then Amboise) was also confused with a craze for this new architecture and these tastes coming from Italy which covered the Loire Valley with splendid castles and mansions.
Land of arts, Touraine gave birth to illustrious names like Rabelais, Ronsard, Balzac or Descartes. For nearly 200 years, silk work has been one of the major economic activities of the region, making Tours the first "silk" city in France. More and more cyclists are taking advantage of the 100 km "Loire à vélo" trail linking Tours to Angers. On the program, castles but also vineyards, cities of character and banks of the Loire, real ornithological reserves.
