Born from the will of a king to be the instrument of his government, Versailles is today a modern city, designed according to a rational and systematic plan. Its castle and gardens are among the most illustrious monuments of the world's heritage and constitute the most beautiful achievement of French art in the 17th century. The Grand Trianon, a place of relaxation for the royal family, was one of Napoleon's favorite residences. As for the small Trianon, it evokes the sweetness of life and was the emblematic place of stay of Marie-Antoinette. Nowadays, the city has several districts: the Saint-Louis district, the Old Versailles, the Notre-Dame district and finally the Montreuil district. Each of them has its own market. In the heart of historic Versailles stands the largest antique center in western Paris.
The south wing of the Palace of Versailles houses the session room of the Congress of Parliament, which occasionally meets to revise the constitution.
