Compiègne is a French municipality located in the department of Oise, of which it is the sub-prefecture, in the region Hauts-de-France. The city of Compiègne is located downstream from the confluence of the Oise and Aisne rivers, in the Oise department. It is the third largest urban area, with 98,418 inhabitants. To the southeast lies the state forest of Compiègne.
The city is located at the limits of the Valois and Soissonnais regions, a natural junction of the three geographical and cultural areas of Picardy, Champagne and Île-de-France. Because of its geographical position, Compiègne is influenced by many cities and towns in and outside Picardy.
