The old province of Poitou stretched from the ocean to Limousin. Today, Poitou, meeting of the two departments, Vienne and Deux-Sèvres, is part of the Poitou-Charentes region. The two departments of Vienne and Deux-Sèvres cover nearly 13,000 km2. They are bordered on the west by the Vendée, on the north by Maine-et-Loire and Indre-et-Loire, on the east by the Indre and Haute-Vienne, on the south by the two Charentes.
Poitou is composed of very different natural environments where four geological assemblages are mixed, the Armorican Massif in the north-west, on the Bocage and Gâtine side of Parthenay; the Paris Basin to the north and north-east; the rock formations of the Aquitaine basin in the center; to the south, finally, towards the south-east of Vienne, the granitic and schistous lands of the Massif Central. The landscapes are diversified. From west to east, we will first find the Marais Poitevin, the largest of the Atlantic facade, which extends to the gates of Niort. Then, the hedgerow occupies most of the land - including Gâtine, old country in the heart of Poitou - simply broken occasionally by cereal plains and hills to the north.
The main cities are Poitiers, the capital, famous for the church of Notre-Dame-la-Grande and the Futuroscope, Niort and its mutuals, Châtellerault, homeland of Descartes, Melle which originates from lead silver mines, Partenay , in the middle of the Gâtine, Thouars, strategic citadel, or Chauvigny, medieval city. The abbey of Saint-Savin is the city of the fairy Melusine.
