The game of snakes and ladders, much appreciated by the English in the 19th century, is derived from Indian nagapasa, also known as moksha patamu, which symbolizes the spiritual progression of man confronted with earthly temptations. The scales represent the elevation of the soul and the snakes represent its decline. The goal of the game is to reach square 100 first.
