Burgundy is a former French administrative region consisting of four departments: Yonne, Côte-d'Or, Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire. It corresponds to a part of the historical and cultural province located in the center-east of France. The administrative region, and before it the province, owes its name to the Burgundians of the time before the Merovingians, who created the kingdom of Burgundy, which became the kingdom of Burgundy and then of the Two Burgundians in the Carolingian era. Later on, a distinction was made between the county of Burgundy (or Franche-Comté de Bourgogne), which corresponds to the current Franche-Comté, and the duchy of Burgundy, which corresponds roughly to the current region of Burgundy. The 10 largest cities in the region are Dijon (the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy and the chief town of the region), followed by Chalon-sur-Saône, Nevers, Auxerre, Mâcon, Sens, Le Creusot, Beaune, Montceau-les-Mines and Autun.
Its inhabitants are called Burgundians. As part of the territorial reform, the Burgundy region merged with Franche-Comté on January 1, 2016 to form the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
