The Charente is, first of all, rich in its past: from prehistory to the twentieth century, Angoumois is full of architectural buildings that are evidence of significant artistic creativity over the centuries. It offers a great diversity of landscapes; To the north are fertile lands and their cereal crops; in the west, it is a landscape of vines with its limestone lands privileged for the production of Cognac. The Charente alone covers 50% of the Cognac protected designation vineyard, which, exported to more than 90%, is one of the best-selling French products in the world.
In addition to the professions associated with Cognac, the department, organized around Angoulème and Cognac, is anchored industrially (agro-food industries, electrical and electronic components ...) and benefits from a clearly positive balance of trade. Since the creation of the university center 10 years ago, the department has been able to prosper higher education. The world of images at Angoulème was reinforced by the creation of the joint syndicate of the Images Pole, Magelis, Angoulème is also known for its Comic Strip Festival. These are all assets that make the Charente a successful entry into the third millennium.
