You and your company are highly skilled members of disease control teams fighting a battle against four deadly diseases. Your team will travel the world to stem the tide of infection and develop the resources you need to discover cures. You must work together, using your individual strengths to eradicate the diseases before they spread across the world. Time is running out as outbreaks of infection accelerate the spread of the plague. Will you find the cures in time? The fate of mankind is in your hands! As in any good cooperative game, the players play together against the game. Here, the players represent scientists with very specific roles who will try to fight against four diseases that are developing all over the world, the yellow, blue, black and red viruses.
Each turn, cards are turned over to indicate new areas of infection. A "disease cube" is then added to the affected cities. A city can receive three, which correspond to three levels of infection. If a fourth is added, there is an outbreak, and the disease spreads to all the neighbouring cities... Regularly an "Epidemic" card appears with multiple effects: the number of cities that will be infected increases and, most importantly, after drawing a card from the bottom of the deck (to add a place that is not yet infected), all the cards already drawn are reshuffled together and placed on top of the deck. Cities that are already infected and where a disease may not have been eradicated will therefore quickly come back into play, further complicating the players' task.
In the past, players have tried to counteract the spread of diseases by taking advantage of their special skills. The dispatcher can move other players, the operations expert can easily build research stations, the scientist can more easily discover cures, the doctor is most effective when it comes to treating a disease and the researcher is free to give any card to a partner. Players can perform four actions in turn among the special actions or by moving around the globe. So there are five roles and a maximum of four players. At each game, one of the roles will be missing a little more renewing the strategies to be implemented.
To discover a cure, you must be on a research station and collect five cards of the same colour to cure the corresponding disease. Even with the cure, a disease continues to spread until it is eradicated. Players in turn draw two city cards, which allow them to find cures and also to move around. They can also take advantage of some special cards. Players win immediately if they manage to find all four remedies. They lose if the players' draw pile runs out, if there are more than eight infection sites, or if there is a shortage of counters.
