The Pas-de-Calais is a French department, which owes its name to the Pas de Calais (without a capital "pas" and without hyphens), the strait that separates it from England. The prefecture of this department is Arras. The Insee and the Post Office give it the code 62. The Pas-de-Calais is characterized by its contrasted territory, which includes an important tourist and natural heritage on the one hand and, on the other hand, very urbanized areas. It is one of the most populated departments in France, with its easternmost part hosting more than half of its population. Although it does not have a very large city, nor an urban center polarizing the entire departmental space, it does have a balanced network of medium and secondary cities, the main ones being Calais, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Arras and Lens.
It was created by grouping together the Artois (around Arras, Béthune, Lens and Saint-Omer) and part of the former Picardy (around Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais), two territories that remain, even today, quite different culturally and economically. Until January 1, 2016, the Pas-de-Calais was attached to the Nord department to form the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Today, it constitutes with four other departments, the Hauts-de-France region.
