Located in the heart of the continent, Geneva has always been a cosmopolitan meeting point. As early as the Middle Ages, merchants and travelers from all over the world met here. Very early on, the city was endowed with a democratic government and was a welcoming place, in particular for Jean Calvin and later for the Protestants. As a center of influence of the Reformation, it opposed the Pope and became a cultural center before its time where artists and thinkers from all over Europe met.
Home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, it affirmed its humanitarian vocation with the signature of the first Geneva Convention at the beginning of the 19th century and its international destiny with the installation of the headquarters of the League of Nations in 1917. Today, Geneva is the second UN hub in the world and home to many international organizations. The city is known for its charm and its gentle way of life and has managed to preserve its landscapes, its Old Town, its traditions, its cultural life and its festivals, while at the same time opening up to the modern world with a high-performance industry and an extremely powerful service sector. Geneva is a dynamic city, an agglomeration of 400,000 inhabitants and a major international center; it is a "mirror of the world".
