The North is the French department including the northernmost territories of France. The prefecture and largest city of this department is Lille. INSEE and the Post office give it the code 59. With 2,603,472 inhabitants in 2014, it is the most populated department of the country, supported by the Lille metropolis which shelters almost half of its population. Formerly forming, with the Pas-de-Calais, the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, it constitutes since 2016, with four other departments, the region Hauts-de-France.
It consists of the French Flanders, which corresponds to the departmental districts of Dunkirk, Lille and Douai (formerly part of the county of Flanders), Cambresis (around Cambrai, former ecclesiastical principality), the Avesnois (around Maubeuge ) and the southern part of the former county of Hainaut (around Valenciennes). In fact, the North Department describes a similar layout to the province of pre-revolutionary Flanders, which had adopted the black lion coat of arms of the former county of Flanders even though this province also included Cambresis, Avesnois and a part Hainaut in addition to the County of Flanders proper.
It is also a department with a young population, home to several universities including the university center of Lille which is the 3rd in France.
