Former capital of Provence, it is in Aix that the counts of Anjou and Aragon decided to make their residence in 1189. This position of strength allowed the city to develop without precedent. Today, the urban area of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence ranks third behind Lyon and Paris. The motto "City of Water, City of Art" that is attributed to the city is based on both a remarkable architectural heritage (140 classified historical monuments) and the numerous cultural events that the city hosts, most notably the International Festival of Lyric Art.
Here, the splendor of the Cours Mirabeau, laid out in the 17th century on the ramparts, leads you to the monumental Roltonde fountain, erected in 1860. Aix was the city of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), and celebrated his centenary in many ways. The gastronomy of Aix has the colors of the Provencal and Mediterranean cuisine, and who does not know the calissons of Aix? The historical past is mixed with a technological future (the Arbois and Rousset technology parks) to which are added the quality and multiplicity of the universities (Political Sciences, Literature, Law...) which bring together nearly two thousand students.
