Colmar, prefecture of Haut-Rhin, is remarkable in many points. Capital of Alsace wines, it has partnered with Mulhouse for the creation of the University of Haute Alsace. City of art and history admirably flowery, restored and maintained, it is a condensed Alsace in what it has more typical. Located at the foot of the Vosges mountains, Colmar enjoys one of the driest climates in France.
It is in the heart of a major dynamic center: Rhenish Europe, halfway between Strasbourg in the north (70 km) and Basel in Switzerland, and only 20 km from the German border. Its history has inevitably propelled it to the forefront of the two world wars; in February 1945, it is the last Alsatian town to be liberated. It has a large number of characteristic constructions of Alsatian architecture and the German Renaissance, as well as several churches of Gothic style and the famous museum of Unterlinden, one of the most visited of France. At Christmas, you will be transported in a fairy-tale atmosphere: illuminations and decorations enhance the heritage in a warm atmosphere where the Colmarians compete with imagination to parade facades and windows.
