Hérault (in Occitan Erau) is a French department in the Occitanie region that takes its name from the Hérault, a coastal river that runs through it. The inhabitants are called the Héraultais. The Insee and the Post Office give it the code 34. Its prefecture is Montpellier. The department of Herault is located in the south of France, and is part of the Occitanie region. It borders the departments of Aude to the southwest, Tarn and Aveyron to the northwest and Gard to the northeast, and is bordered by the Mediterranean to the south.
To define the Hérault, we often tend to compare its territory to an open amphitheater facing the sea. The geography of the Hérault is marked by the diversity of its geology and its landscapes. These range from the southern foothills of the Massif Central to the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the garrigue areas and the low plains of the Languedoc wine region. The Hérault is bathed in a Mediterranean climate.
