The department of Isère (pronounced [i.ˈzɛʁ]) is a French department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and named after the Isère River, a left-bank tributary of the Rhône. Insee and the Post Office give it the code 38, but originally it was 37. Its prefecture is Grenoble. Within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Isère is the largest department and the second largest in terms of population; its inhabitants are the Isérois and Iséroises.
