Le Mans is one of the major cities of the French Grand Ouest, located in the region of Pays de la Loire and the department of Sarthe of which it is the prefecture. The city is located at the confluence of the rivers Sarthe and Huisne. Former provincial capital of Maine and Perche from the 16th century, it saw the marriage of Geoffroy V of Anjou and Mathilde the Empress, daughter of the King of England, thus laying the foundations of the Plantagenet Empire, and the birth of Henry II. The old town of Le Mans, called Cité Plantagenêt, is the historic district of the city. Le Mans is an ancient "red city", because of the particular color of its Gallo-Roman enclosure, partly preserved, dating from the second century.
In 2015, the city had 143,325 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the Sarthe, the third largest city in the Pays de la Loire region in terms of the number of inhabitants within the city walls, after Nantes and Angers, and the twentieth largest city in France. With 322 122 inhabitants, the urban area of Le Mans is the 16th largest in France and the 2nd largest in the region.
