In the geographical heart of Western Europe, not far from the Rhine, in the plain of Alsace, bordered by the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest, at the gateway to Germany and Switzerland, Mulhouse is a lively and flowery city. A free city in the 12th century, then a Republic allied to the Swiss Confederation, Mulhouse joined France in 1798. As a pioneer city of the Industrial Revolution in France (textile, mechanical and chemical industries), it created its own model, the "Mulhouse model", a marriage between the spirit of enterprise and the taste for innovation, both technical and social.
The Place de la Réunion, the heart of the city, recalls this past. As the European capital of technical museums, it is home to the largest automobile museum in the world. Mulhouse is also, with the University of Haute Alsace, a multidisciplinary teaching and research center.
