Quimper, Prefecture of Finistère and traditional capital of Cornouaille, is the French version of Kemper, which means "confluence". The city was indeed built at the confluence of the Odet with the Steir and the Frout, at the bottom of an aber. Under the old regime, it was commonly called Quimper Corentin, in reference to its first bishop. Its old districts with half-timbered houses and facades carved in wood and stone, its magnificent cathedral, give it a tourist interest. Located 16 km from the sea, it has established its activity in the fishing, food-processing, light mechanics and textile industries, in addition to its famous earthenware.
Classified as a "city of art and history", Quimper enchants us each year with its Cornouaille festival. It is an unmissable event that brings together 3,000 dancers and musicians on the quays of Quimper. "Kemper en fête" mobilizes the making of 60 adult costumes and 95 children. Election of the Queen of Cornouaille followed by a giant gavotte, triumph of the ringers, Bagadou championship, "witches" combining Breton dances and street arts; this colorful festival is the image of Quimper: a city rooted in its history and modern at the same time.
