The episode of the Picrocholine Wars is one of the most famous passages in the famous novel Gargantua, written by François Rabelais in 1534. Using a fight between shepherds and millers as a pretext, Picrochole, King of Lerna, declares war on Gargantua's father, Grandgousier. The latter, a model of the enlightened monarch of the Renaissance, does everything possible to calm the conflict.
But Pichrocole, mistaking this attitude for weakness, invades his neighbour's kingdom. Grandgousier appeals to his son, and Gargantua, at the head of his army and his faithful companions, inflicts a humiliating defeat on Pichrocole, who ends up fleeing on a donkey. The Picrocholine Wars simulates this famous episode of French literature, through a simple and entertaining wargame. Players will find or discover through this game all the events that make the charm of this novel parodying the chivalry stories of the time: the giant Gargantua of course, with his friends Gymnaste and Brother Jean, but also the deceitful Picrochole and his lieutenants.
Although it takes on certain "Rabelaisian" elements, The Picrocholine Wars is a balanced game in which each side has many assets and in which the players must successively assume the roles of attacker and defender. The Picrocholine Wars, combining fun, culture and history, is ideal for introducing new players to wargames.
