A great historical crossroads, Strasbourg has always been a place where different religions and cultures met. It knew a golden age in the Middle Ages, building little by little its wonderful cathedral in pink sandstone. Attached to Germany from 1870 to 1918 and again in 1940, it was definitively liberated from the occupation with the arrival of General Leclerc's troops in November 1944. It was then chosen as the seat of the Council of Europe and became a symbol of European unity and reconstruction, like its European Parliament.
Today, from the medieval district of the Grande Île, classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site, to the long avenues of the "German" city, Strasbourg's architectural ensemble remains a living testimony to the richness born of a mixture of cultures. Its industrial dynamism is undeniable (metallurgy, chemistry, ....), as is its university dynamism: it welcomes nearly 40,000 students.
